DIY giant B&Q wanted to refresh a tired neon-lit façade sign at their Stockport store and needed a sustainable, fast -turnaround installation which would deliver energy cost savings and consistent brightness over time.

Partnering with B&Q’s own maintenance provider Product Plan, UK Circuits’ 15 years of development  experience in the field of LEDs was crucial to understanding the capabilities required for the project and the component sourcing which would ensure success.

With a short timescale of eight weeks from concept to delivery, a tight budget and in the face of adverse weather conditions, the disintegrating neon tubes were replaced with 4560 individual LEDs. The design incorporated eight LEDs for each circuit board and an eight hour production turnaround on the assembly line. A prototype 4.3m x 3.3m letter B was laid out on the production facility floor  and mounting took three days.

As part of a real commitment to recycling and sustainability, Sky refurbishes its TV boxes for longer life. Hard drives are wiped and power supply units (PSUs) are received by UK Circuits for re-work.

The Sky green initiative requires that the re-worked PSUs are returned for use with customers lead-free. UK Circuits uses a lead-free process to remove 15 electrolytic capacitors from the PSUs and replace them with approved new versions which have a tested, guaranteed 12 month lifespan.

Testing and traceability are of paramount importance in this contract – UK Circuits carries out three phases to deliver full compliance to Sky: optical inspection of polarity; functional testing; barcode scanning and logging for traceability along with control of packing and shipping.

In a daily turnaround of almost 1000 units at peak, UK Circuits has delivered 1.5m refurbished capacitors over the past three years. UK Circuits is one of only a handful of UK companies who will undertake re-work projects, as these contracts demand that the company takes a high degree of responsibility for the quality of the finished product.
